b. Operations
Channel 49's ACRIAN TV30U RF amplifier is dead, dead, dead on Laurel Mt. The muffin fan seized up and the amplifier overheated and failed.
d. Telephone messages
No report.
E. Discussion topics
1. Channel 49 failure
It was informally decided to hold off on repairing/replacing the failed channel 64 bandpass filter due to channel 49 being out of commission.   Member Cole mentioned that his research into DTV translation lead him to understand that translator manufacturers had add-on modules for their translators to make them suitable for DTV translation.   President Middlemiss authorized member Cole to investigate acquiring a new translator with that option.
2. DTV translation (I)
Member Ash commented that 3dB gain of the TVB UHF antenna could cause it to not receive DTV signals.   Member Cole related that his research indicated that reliable 8VSB reception seemed to depend on a high carrier-to-noise ratio and not just a high signal-to-noise ratio and this implies that a larger surface area of the active element is better.   Conversation rapidly digressed.
3. DTV translation (II)
The channel 64 antenna is an old Scala transmitting antennas with (probably) the channel 65 stinger.   There should be a few more Scala antennas on Laurel Mountain, but it is not known with any certainty where the other channel "stingers" presently reside.
4. DTV translation (III)
A discussion of which DTV station to translate resulted in the opinion that KTTV-DT would be highly desirable due to the many complaints about the quality of KTTV during football season.   Member Cole said that KTTV-DT is broadcast on channel 65 and that interference from translated KCAL on channel 65 might make reception difficult if not impossible.
F. Closure
1. Next meeting: 5:00 PM, February 2, 2004, Kern County Library, Ridgecrest
2. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 6:15 PM.
